testing whether a backup can be restored

The existence of a backup does not prove that files are complete and restorable. A useful test opens selected files from the backup without relying on the original drive.

Do you want to know whether your backup really works?
Tell us where the backup is stored and which software or cloud service created it. We can help test a safe restore.
Ask about a restore test

What should you test?

  • are the newest important folders present
  • do photos and documents open
  • does the cloud service retain older versions
  • are encryption keys and passwords available

Sync is not always a backup

Deletion, malware, or a bad change may synchronise everywhere. Version history and a separate offline copy improve protection.

A safe restore test

Restore a small sample to another folder or drive. Do not overwrite originals during the test.

How Bitmaster can help

We can check an external drive, transfer data to a replacement computer, and help create a clearer backup routine.

A backup is complete only after a successful restore
We can restore a selected sample separately and verify versions, encryption keys, and important application-specific data.
Test your backup restore

Three copies do not always mean three backups

If the computer, external drive, and cloud service immediately synchronise the same deletion, several copies may still provide only one recovery point. A stronger setup keeps one copy separate from daily use and retains version history in the cloud.

What should you restore as a test?

Choose several file types: a document, photo, video, and an email archive if relevant. Check the file size and date as well as whether it opens. Restore a complete folder to verify names and folder structure.

When should the backup setup be replaced?

Review it when the backup drive stays permanently connected, storage is full, the software reports errors, or a required password is missing. Important business data should also have an owner and a scheduled restore test.
